Psychological Horror

Psychological horror focuses on disturbing the audience through mental states. This genre aims to confuse and cause the audience distress by using the characters emotional instability, fears and the use of eerie music and cinematography and contains less physical violence than other genres of horror to scare the audience.
The plot usually focuses on everyday life or even "based on a true story", so that the events in the movie has happened or could happen in real life.
The main character usually have mental illnesses, have hallucinations, or go through emotional disturbances. The villains are usually 'normal' humans in appearance and less like fairy tale monsters; the idea is that the villains and the fears it represents are realistic and reflects real life so that we can empathise with the characters. Some psychological horror movies have paranormal themes or contain supernatural beings due to them having multiple genres/subgenres.
