Levi Strauss- Binary Opposition

Binary Opposition is when a pair of related terms or concepts have the complete opposite meaning of each other.

Strauss believed that we understand certain words by our understanding of the difference between the word and an antonym.

Examples
  • Black and White
  • Good and Evil
  • Strong and Weak
This is commonly used in horror films to establish roles and to make the audience know the difference between the 'villain' and the 'hero' and from the 'good' and the 'evil'.
