Tzvetan Todorov

Narrative Theory
Todorov's theory suggests that all narratives follow the same three part structure:

  • Equilibrium- the first part of the story where characters are content and happy, everything as it should be.
  • Disequilibrium- an event/character which disrupts their happiness
  • Return to equilibrium- the final part where everything is back in order, problem is solved.

Example- Big Hero 6

Equilibrium
Hiro, the protagonist, had decided to apply for a prestigious university his brother attended. To enrol, he had to present a project in the university science fair. His chance of enrolment were high as many people liked his creation in the science fair.

Disequilibrium
There was a sudden explosion in the science fair building, killing Tadashi, Hiro's brother and a robotics professor who encouraged him to enrol. His project, microbots, were believed to have been destroyed, leaving Hiro only one. Hiro discovers someone had been mass producing his microbots with the help of Baymax. He later discovered that it was the professor who started the fire, stole and mass produced his microbots to kill someone. Hiro journeys out with Tadashi's friends to stop the professor.

Return to equilibrium
The professor is stopped and arrested. Hiro attends University with his friends and they continue to help others in need.

My short film...
... may be too short to follow this narrative. While many films do, this does not necessarily apply to short films as there is simply not enough time to fit everything in.
